Mission Statement:
The Mecklenburg Autism Team (AT and T) will provide technical training, consultations, and collaborative support for school professionals who work with students affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The team will provide opportunities to increase autism awareness in order to enhance the education and lives of students on the Autism spectrum.
The team will assist parents of autistic students to better understand and to accept their children's unique world view.

What is Autism?
Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically appears during the first three years of life and lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is a spectrum disorder with a wide range of characteristics ranging from mild to severe. Individuals with autism demonstrate difficulties in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Each person will display communication, social, and behaviorial patterns that are unique to the individual but, fit into the overall diagnosis of ASD. People with autism also process and respond to information in uniqe ways. (Autism Society of America).

Request for assistance forms are available from every school principal. Please send the completed form to Mary Hayes at the Mecklenburg County Schools Diagnostic Center. The team will make every effort to respond within 5 school days.
