Mecklenburg County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. In accordance with Virginia Code § 22.1-79.3(F), we are providing families with essential information regarding the safe storage of prescription medications and firearms.
Safe Medication Storage To help prevent accidental poisoning, misuse, or overdose, please follow these safety steps:
Store all medications in original containers with child-resistant caps.
Keep medications out of reach of children and pets, and secure narcotics in a locked cabinet or drawer.
Promptly dispose of unused or expired medications through local drug take-back programs.
Safe Firearm Storage Responsible storage is critical to preventing accidental injuries and unauthorized access:
Store firearms unloaded and locked (using a gun safe, lockbox, or trigger lock) with ammunition stored separately.
Teach children to never touch a firearm and to tell a trusted adult if they find one.
Before allowing your child to visit another home, it is encouraged to ask about their firearm storage practices.
Legal Requirements and Support Under Virginia Law (§ 18.2-56.2), it is unlawful to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in a manner that endangers a child under the age of 14. If you are concerned that a child may be at risk of harming themselves or others, please contact a healthcare professional or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
