Mecklenburg County Public Schools joins the Virginia School Boards Association and school divisions across the Commonwealth in recognizing Bullying Prevention Month this October.

This statewide initiative highlights the importance of creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where every student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn.

Why It Matters

Bullying can take many forms, including verbal, physical, social, and cyberbullying. Its impact can extend well beyond the moment itself, affecting student well-being, attendance, academic performance, and overall school climate.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that students who experience bullying may be at increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and other negative outcomes that can affect both learning and development.

A Shared Commitment

Bullying prevention is an ongoing responsibility shared across every level of public education.

The Virginia School Boards Association encourages school divisions to engage students, staff, and families in conversations and activities that promote respect, kindness, inclusion, and awareness throughout the year.

MCPS is committed to helping ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn in an environment where they feel supported, included, and valued.

How Families Can Help

Families play an important role in bullying prevention.

Talk with your student about how they treat others and how others treat them.

Help them understand the different forms bullying can take, including online behavior.

Ask whether they have seen anyone being left out, teased, threatened, or treated unfairly.

Make sure your student knows which trusted adults at school they can turn to for help.

If you have a concern, contact your student’s teacher, school counselor, or principal.

Learn More

Families and community members are encouraged to explore bullying prevention resources from the Virginia School Boards Association and learn more about strategies that support safe, respectful, and inclusive schools.

Creating safe and supportive learning environments requires intentional effort, communication, and partnership. Together, we can help make sure every MCPS student feels safe, respected, and ready to learn.
