VHSL Announces 2026 Class 4 All-State Baseball Team

Atlee's Chase Blumberg chosen the Class 4 Player of the Year; Woodgrove's Rusty Smith is the Class 4 Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. —

The Virginia High School League announces its 2026 Class 4 all-state baseball team. Atlee senior pitcher Chase Blumberg

is the Class 4 Player of the Year, and Woodgrove head coach Rusty Smith is the Class 4 Coach of the Year.

Blumberg, a Class 4 second-team all-state selection for the past two years as a pitcher, leads this year's Class 4 all-state team as the POY. The 6'0", 180-pound hard-throwing right hander posted a 9-0 record along with five saves. In 53 innings pitched, the VMI signee offered few opportunities for opposing batters with a 0.13 ERA, a 0.592 WHIP, 84 strikeouts, and a 0.098 batting average. Blumberg pitched the Raiders into the state finals with three dominant innings in relief against Jefferson Forest in the state semifinals. After entering the game with the bases-loaded and no-outs, he then proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the Cavaliers' rally. He finished his brilliant career with a 22-1 record, six saves, and a 0.48 ERA.

After 12 seasons leading the Woodgrove baseball program, Smith's Wolverines brought home the school's first-ever state baseball title with a 2-1 win over defending champion Atlee in the Class 4 finals. The team had two state runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2025. Woodgrove finished the season 20-5. In addition to winning Woodgrove's first state championship in baseball, his Wolverines claimed the Catoctin District and Region B tournament titles. In his three seasons at Woodgrove, Smith's teams are 161-91 overall.

Eight (8) players make up the first and second teams, regardless of position. Only those players selected to all-region first teams are eligible for selection to the All-State team. Each All-State selection committee comprises eight basketball coaches (2 from each Region).
