October Senior of the Month
Teriyonna Olds
Mecklenburg County High School is proud to recognize Teriyonna Olds as our October Senior of the Month. Teriyonna is the daughter of Teri Olds and William Gregory. She has been an active and dedicated member of the Mecklenburg County Marching Band since her freshman year in 2022, during which she has served in leadership roles for three years. Teriyonna has earned recognition in music, having been selected to the District 3 All-District Band for two consecutive years. She is also a member of Mecklenburg DeltaGEMS, an organization she joined in her sophomore year. Through DeltaGEMS, she has gained valuable skills in financial management, history, and community service that will help prepare her for the future.
Outside of school, Teriyonna shares her musical gifts with the community. She plays electric bass for New Light Baptist Church in Skipwith, Virginia, and also serves as a background vocalist for her godfather’s gospel group. Additionally, she is a talented multi-instrumentalist, playing bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitar, piano, brass instruments, and saxophone. She also enjoys solving puzzles and playing video games in her free time.
Teriyonna has maintained A’s and B’s throughout her high school career. Additionally, she was recognized by the SVCC President. She is currently a dual enrollment student at the Governor’s School of Southside Virginia. Teriyonna aspires to attend a four-year college to study forensic science with the goal of becoming a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI). Congratulations to you, Teriyonna.

Mecklenburg County Public Schools (MCPS) is excited to announce our first Attendance Power Day on September 30, 2025!
On this special day, every school will be competing for the Power Attendance Award, a recognition that celebrates the importance of showing up—every student, every day. The school with the highest attendance rate will take home the Power Attendance School Banner and earn the honor of displaying the Division Traveling Trophy.
In addition to these awards, MCPS will highlight and recognize students for their engagement, effort, and commitment to learning.

🐦🔥Mecklenburg County High School is proud to recognize Slate George, son of Kevin and Candie George, as the September Senior of the Month. Slate is an outstanding member of the Phoenix Family whose involvement reaches across academics, athletics, and service. He is a dedicated member of BETA, DECA, FFA, the MCHS Golf Team, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside of school, he is an active member of Clarksville Baptist Church, where he shares his musical talents by playing the drums and participating in the praise band. When he is not serving in school or church, Slate enjoys golf, fishing, and watching sports. He has also demonstrated a strong work ethic, having been employed at Kinderton Country Club for years. Academically, he challenges himself by attending the Governor’s School of Southside Virginia, which further prepares him for his future goals. Following graduation, Slate plans to attend a four-year college and pursue a career as a pediatric nurse, with the goal of helping children and their families face medical challenges. We are proud to honor Slate as our September Senior of the Month. His leadership, dedication, and service reflect the values of Mecklenburg County High School, and we look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes in the future.

Today at Mecklenburg County High School, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office kicked off our new Public Safety course with hands-on demonstrations from the Dive Team, Drone Team, Tactical Response Team, K-9 units, and more. This collaboration gives students real-world experience, connects classroom learning to high-demand careers, and strengthens the local workforce pipeline.
By learning directly from professionals who protect and serve, students see the skills, technology, and teamwork that keep our community safe. Thank you to the Sheriff’s Office for investing time, expertise, and equipment in our learners. Partnerships like this inspire purpose, open doors to meaningful careers, and deepen the bond between our schools and the community we serve.

School Board Update | July 28, 2025
This week kicks off our annual bus driver training and safety meetings. The Transportation Department is leading four sessions to accommodate over 100 of our dedicated bus and car drivers, dividing them into smaller groups for a full day of focused training.
We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and care our current drivers bring to the job each day. However, we are still in urgent need of additional drivers, especially substitutes.
If you or someone you know is interested in making a positive impact in our schools and community, please consider joining our transportation team.
Safe transportation starts with great people, and we’re hiring!

Due to dangerously high heat indexes, several athletic practices as well as band have been modified for the safety of our students. Please review the updated schedule below. The shuttle bus will still run as scheduled.

MS Football – 3:00–6:00 PM in the Auxiliary Gym
HS Cross Country – 6:00–8:00 PM (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) in the HS Gym

Band – 3:00–5:00 PM (Indoors)
